The United States had surpassed every other country in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/03\/26\/health\/usa-coronavirus-cases.html\">confirmed coronavirus cases<\/a>&nbsp;and was on lockdown as locally mandated \u201cstay at home\u201d orders were issued. Then George Floyd, a 46-year-old unarmed black man, died at the hands, or knee, of now-fired Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin. For eight minutes and 46 seconds, the world turned its attention to social media channels and television broadcasts to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0gQYMBALDXc\">watch recorded video of Floyd\u2019s cries of \u201cI can\u2019t breathe\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;growing faint, handcuffed and pinned under Chauvin\u2019s knee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Blacks, Floyd\u2019s death was just another loss to systemic racism. But for the general public, the video taken by 17-year-old Darnella Frazier was proof positive of the intersection of police brutality, racial inequality, and social justice. The recording of Floyd\u2019s death was a lens that revealed the harsh realities of Black life in America. For some, Floyd\u2019s death and the media attention it garnered brought forth&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.daytondailynews.com\/news\/local\/the-george-floyd-killing-pivotal-moment-the-nation-history\/zcc5KsFUBAyHS5Mf8LKbtK\/\">comparisons<\/a>&nbsp;to the tragedy of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/black-history\/bloody-sunday-video\"><em>Bloody Sunday<\/em><\/a>, March 7, 1965. Both horrific events in Black history that influenced public opinion about the need for social and political reform. The events of&nbsp;<em>Bloody Sunday<\/em>&nbsp;gave people an in-your-face picture of the realities of segregation and police brutality in America. In parallel, George Floyd\u2019s death also gave voice and credibility to many non-Black, oppressed people that Black lives, or at least in this case one Black life in the form of George Floyd, did matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Social Advocacy and Political Action<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the midst of the pandemic, hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets to assure their voices were heard. Chants of \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d filled the air in over 150 cities. According to a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/fact-tank\/2020\/09\/16\/support-for-black-lives-matter-has-decreased-since-june-but-remains-strong-among-black-americans\/\">&nbsp;Pew Research<\/a>&nbsp;study, the BLM movement saw a 67% approval rating from May through June. It was through this movement that political and social justice allies like the NAACP,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/greaterdiversity.com\/divine-nine-organizations-prepare-2020-elections-gdn-exclusive-vol-ii-part-xxvi\/\">Divine Nine<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uncfsu.edu\/national-pan-hellenic-council-members-sending-voting-message\">National Pan-Hellenic Council (historically black fraternities and sororities),<\/a>&nbsp;and similar organizations developed voter registration initiatives (like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/blacklivesmatter.com\/register-to-vote\/\">The Electoral Justice Project<\/a>) to encourage voter turnout in hopes of changing the de facto support of police brutality against Black people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsu.edu\/academics\/collegesanddepartments\/sociology\/about\/faculty-staff\/messineo-melinda\">Melinda Messineo<\/a>, a Ball State University professor and sociologist, observed how the pandemic gave people the ability \u201cto pause and hear the argument (for police reforms, racial and social justice, and political accountability) in a way that they hadn\u2019t heard of before.\u201d She added, \u201cBy protesting under the pandemic conditions, people were going out there, risking their own lives in a way that they didn\u2019t have to before.\u201d In spite of the groundswell of support from a majority of the American public, many on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/george-floyd-systemic-change-conservatives-090050841.html\">political right were not as amenable to change<\/a>. The pushback further set the political stage for clarion calls for reform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"648\" height=\"722\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.electionanalysis.ws\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/Gabriel_Tait_-_Tait_Via_Jermaine_Hunterr_BLM_plaza_in_Washington.png?resize=648%2C722&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.electionanalysis.ws\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/Gabriel_Tait_-_Tait_Via_Jermaine_Hunterr_BLM_plaza_in_Washington.png?w=718&amp;ssl=1 718w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.electionanalysis.ws\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/Gabriel_Tait_-_Tait_Via_Jermaine_Hunterr_BLM_plaza_in_Washington.png?resize=269%2C300&amp;ssl=1 269w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Election Night (week)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first votes in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2020\/11\/02\/politics\/dixville-notch-2020-results\/index.html\">U.S. election were cast shortly after midnight in Dixville Notch,<\/a>&nbsp;a small township in New Hampshire. Former Vice President Joe Biden, a Democrat, took all five votes for president. The clean sweep gave news broadcasters on three cable news channels pause, leading a few of them to jokingly ask if this vote was anecdotal evidence of a \u201cblue wave\u201d about to sweep across America. The answer was quickly realized when 16 of the 21 votes cast by residents from Millsfield, New Hampshire, were for President Trump, Biden received five votes. The final total 16 votes for Trump and 10 for Biden. The early vote in two small New Hampshire towns did not evidence a fast approaching \u201cblue wave,\u201d but it was foreshadowed the many ebbs and flows that marked the election. New Hampshire would offer a glimpse of our divided nation. A nation wrestling with its social, racial, and political identity, and with each state election result, a collective anxiety would rise depending on one\u2019s political affiliation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For four days, the nation held its collective breath, hoping the other side would not win. Phrases like, \u201cWe have to be patient,\u201d \u201cTransparency is going to be key,\u201d \u201cNo rush in counting the votes,\u201d \u201cTake time to count the votes in PA,\u201d and \u201cThe votes are coming in, but still need to be counted\u201d were commonplace in media discourse. Around 11:25 a.m. EST. on Saturday, November 7th, media organizations called Pennsylvania for Biden. He was awarded its 20 electoral votes raising his total over the 270 electoral college votes required to win the race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, nearly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/11\/04\/2020-election-sees-record-high-turnout-with-at-least-159point8-million-votes-projected.html\">160 million votes<\/a>&nbsp;were casts for the presidential candidates. For President-elect Joe Biden and the first Black female, Vice President-elect Kamala Harris their winning collation of Black and brown people and their big tent inclusive policies were a driving force in turning out over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/targetearly.targetsmart.com\/\">48,032,772<\/a>&nbsp;absentee voters in a socially distant world. During Biden\u2019s first speech as president-elect, he made several important acknowledgments affirming, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/11\/07\/read-joe-biden-acceptance-speech-full-text.html\">the African American community stood up again for me. They always have my back, and I\u2019ll have yours<\/a>.\u201d Additionally, he declared his commitment to, \u201cachieve racial justice and root out systemic racism in this country.\u201d These tenants align with the early BLM movement and should serve as paths for the healing of our America.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dr Gabriel B.
