I proceed with a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thetricontinental.org\/newsletterissue\/conjunctural-analysis\/\">conjunctural analysis<\/a>&nbsp;of what this means for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/demandclimatejustice.org\/\">climate justice<\/a>&nbsp;at the turn of the first quarter of the 21<sup>st<\/sup>Century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/10\/22\/2024-hottest-year-record\">2024 will be the hottest year&nbsp;<\/a>recorded, set to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/news\/media-centre\/climate-change-indicators-reached-record-levels-2023-wmo\">eclipse last year\u2019s records<\/a>. In August,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wmo.int\/media\/news\/july-sets-new-temperature-records\">new temperature records were set for 13 consecutive months<\/a>, culminating in the hottest&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/earth\/nasa-data-shows-july-22-was-earths-hottest-day-on-record\/\">month and day<\/a>&nbsp;on record. 2024 will likely be \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c1dpnxnvv2go\">at least 1.55C hotter than pre-industrial times<\/a>,\u201d the first calendar year to breach the 1.5 degrees Celsius target set&nbsp;under a decade ago. This&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wires.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1002\/wcc.603\">forecloses certain just climate futures<\/a>, magnifying the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/bioscience\/advance-article\/doi\/10.1093\/biosci\/biae087\/7808595\">urgency of climate mitigation and adaptation<\/a>&nbsp;while further constraining our options for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.asisonline.org\/security-management-magazine\/latest-news\/today-in-security\/2022\/march\/three-billion-people-highly-vulnerable-to-climate-change\/\">livable future for billions of people<\/a>. Following&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UVz67cwmxTM\">James Hansen<\/a>, \u201cunder the present geopolitical approach to greenhouse gas emissions,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/oocc\/article\/3\/1\/kgad008\/7335889\">global warming will exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius in the 2020s and 2 degrees Celsius before 2050<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Geopolitically, the planet is significantly more fractured and dangerous than in 2016. If 2024 marks the end of the 1.5 degrees world from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/report\/ar6\/wg1\/\">physical science standpoint<\/a>, then future historians may write 2022 as its signal date, marked by two devastating indicators:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.butler.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?params=\/context\/facsch_papers\/article\/2447\/&amp;path_info=LindenH_IJAP_1999.pdf\">Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine<\/a>, marking this latest renewal of inter-imperialist rivalry; and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/grapher\/total-ghg-emissions?tab=chart&amp;country=~OWID_WRL\">resurgence of emissions past pre-COVID levels<\/a>, spurred by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/news\/the-world-s-coal-consumption-is-set-to-reach-a-new-high-in-2022-as-the-energy-crisis-shakes-markets\">record coal consumption<\/a>.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zora.uzh.ch\/id\/eprint\/230045\/1\/military_emissions6_22_1.pdf\">Wars don\u2019t run on renewables<\/a>&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-solutions\/2023\/06\/14\/marine-base-green-military\/\">yet<\/a>), although Israel has demonstrated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.972mag.com\/lavender-ai-israeli-army-gaza\/\">lethal capabilities of artificial intelligence<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 with its&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/technology-67053139\">colossal emissions footprint<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/news\/israel-ethnic-cleansing-northern-gaza\">with its devastating attacks on North Gaza<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless how much discontent over foreign policy may have figured in the electoral results, from a historical standpoint it might be apt for Palestine to figure in the terminal crisis of the (neo-)liberal \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/international-politics\/geopolitics\/2024\/06\/why-the-west-should-stop-talking-about-the-rules-based-order\">rules-based order<\/a>\u201d: if&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.versobooks.com\/blogs\/news\/the-destruction-of-palestine-is-the-destruction-of-the-earth\">coal-fired British bombardments of Beirut and Akka marked the onset of the age of fossil empire<\/a>, might this latest destruction portend its decline?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the upcoming&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cop29.az\/en\/home\">COP29 climate summit<\/a>, despite record heights \u2013 like temperatures and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/stocks-bonds-rally-federal-cuts-231405705.html\">the S&amp;P 500<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 of the stakes, expectations are low as ever. Azerbaijan marks the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/2022\/11\/14\/climate_justice_movement_human_rights_cop27\">third<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/12\/12\/1218675784\/climate-activists-struggle-to-be-heard-at-this-years-u-n-climate-talks\">consecutive<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ourworldindata.org\/vdem-human-rights-data\">autocracy<\/a>&nbsp;presiding over negotiations, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/climate-reporting.org\/cop28-president-oil-climate\/\">like last year<\/a>, leadership&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/crmzvdn9e18o\">is using the opportunity to sell fossil fuels<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/01\/world\/europe\/azerbaijan-climate-summit-arrests.html\">jail dissidents<\/a>. Unsurprising this \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iigcc.org\/insights\/cop29-finance-cop-expectations\">Finance COP<\/a>\u201d is awash in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/p\/petrodollars.asp\">petrodollars<\/a>, but it enables Azerbaijan&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/07\/18\/middleeast\/cop-28-dubai-greenwashing-climate\/index.html\">to launder their reputation<\/a>&nbsp;shortly after&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/promiseinstitute.law.ucla.edu\/project\/accountability-for-artsakh\/\">conducting an ethnic cleansing of their own<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That the dollar remains the world reserve currency ensures U.S. supremacy within the geo-political-economic order, for now. This unstable equilibrium persists largely because there is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/corporate.vanguard.com\/content\/corporatesite\/us\/en\/corp\/articles\/why-us-dollar-remains-reserve-currency-leader.html\">not yet a suitable alternative available<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/brics-summit-russia-push-end-dollar-dominance-2024-10-16\/\">despite efforts to the contrary<\/a>. And with the U.S. striving to maintain \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11366-024-09883-5\">as large a lead as possible<\/a>\u201d in developing technology to maintain asymmetry against their rivals, the continued flow of dollars for oil was assured even before this most recent triumph of \u201cAmerica First\u201d and \u201cEnergy Dominance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MAGA\u2019s capture of working-class support beyond the white Christian nationalist core may have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/en-us\/link-between-media-consumption-and-public-opinion\">less to do with their understanding or approval of Trump\u2019s proposals<\/a>, than Harris and Biden\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/06\/economy\/economy-trump-reelection\/index.html\">inability to alleviate economic concerns regarding cost of living and quality of life<\/a>. Besides&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/05112024\/climate-change-barely-mentioned-during-presidential-campaign\/\">not promoting a U.S.-led green transition<\/a>, one to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/publications.wri.org\/new-climate-economy-rural-america\">revitalize rural America<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kleinmanenergy.upenn.edu\/commentary\/blog\/the-green-new-deal-is-the-solution-to-the-jobs-issue\/\">guarantee livable working conditions<\/a>, Democrats failed to sell their biggest economic and climate&nbsp;<em>win<\/em>: the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/08\/19\/fact-sheet-the-inflation-reduction-act-supports-workers-and-families\/\">Inflation Reduction Act<\/a>. Hailed as the U.S.\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/07\/28\/politics\/climate-deal-joe-manchin\/index.html\">largest climate investment<\/a>, neither Biden nor Harris could sell the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/30\/economy\/us-economy-gdp-q3\/index.html\">soft landing<\/a>\u201d to working class voters let alone make the case for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/opinion\/energy-environment\/3481622-to-fight-inflation-we-must-fight-climate-change\/\">fighting inflation by fighting climate change<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Americans will get neither if MAGA get their way, as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/11\/06\/nx-s1-5181327\/trump-election-economy-tariffs-deportations\">tariffs will skyrocket prices<\/a>&nbsp;while regulatory dismantling will expose workers and consumers to greater harms. Efforts to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-independent.com\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/trump-mass-deportation-immigration-policy-b2643458.html\">deport, even denaturalize, potentially tens of millions<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 including food producers, construction workers, and caregivers \u2013 will severely constrain basic goods and service provisions, compounding the human suffering and rights violations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is imperative to develop and implement&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dornsife.usc.edu\/news\/stories\/strategy-to-climate-activisms-seeming-chaos\/\">strategy<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/earthfirstjournal\/docs\/dam_3rd_edition\">tactics<\/a>&nbsp;to respond immediately.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/janemcalevey.com\/book\/no-shortcuts-organizing-for-power-in-the-new-gilded-age\/\">Organizing communities and workplaces<\/a>, while continuing to build and maintain&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/surj.org\/\">nationwide<\/a>&nbsp;and transnational networks, to inform and educate, provide&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mutualaidhub.org\/\">mutual aid<\/a>, and not just resist but create viable alternatives to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/focusweb.org\/the-global-rise-of-fascism-and-how-to-fight-it\/\">rising tide of fascism worldwide<\/a>, is essential. There are also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/2024\/11\/7\/amygoodman_column_11_07_2024\">important steps the Biden Administration can take<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond organizing across scale and at all sites of social reproduction, climate activists must be creative and resourceful, retaining what works, adapting to a new reality and pushing the limits of what is realizable. Internationally this may mean escalating demands for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalwitness.org\/en\/blog\/loss-and-damage-is-not-enough-why-we-need-climate-reparations\/\">climate reparations<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/01042022\/indigenous-land-rights-paris-agreement\/\">strengthening indigenous land rights<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/eu-unit\/issues\/climate-energy\/46956\/regulate-fossil-fuel-lobbyists-like-tobacco-experts-tell-eu-parliament\/\">restricting fossil fuel lobbying<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/Topics\/climate-change\/energy-subsidies\">subsidies<\/a>, supporting&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fossilfueltreaty.org\/\">fossil fuel nonproliferation<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solargeoeng.org\/\">geoengineering non-use<\/a>, while picking up where the wave of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fridaysforfutureusa.org\/\">climate strikes<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/climateemergencydeclaration.org\/climate-emergency-declarations-cover-15-million-citizens\/\">emergency declarations<\/a>&nbsp;left off before the pandemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within movements against MAGA and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.versobooks.com\/blogs\/news\/5089-towards-fossil-fascism\">fossil fascism<\/a>, climate advocates must be strategic and selective as they confront<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/environment\/anti-protest-laws-climate-activists\/\">increasingly hostile and violent opposition<\/a>. Solidarity, mutual aid, and obstruction of mass deportation should provide one pathway, but there will be multiple. Movements must be assembled before widespread&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41558-022-01461-y\">civil disobedience<\/a>&nbsp;and direct action, up to and including a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/generalstrikeus.com\/\">general strike<\/a>, can take place, though recent history shows&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6117696\/occupy-wall-street-10-years-later\/\">how quickly<\/a>&nbsp;these&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/campaigns\/2021\/05\/justice-for-george-floyd-a-year-of-global-activism-for-black-lives-and-against-police-violence\/\">can develop<\/a>. Meanwhile, activists must become more&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.versobooks.com\/products\/2649-how-to-blow-up-a-pipeline\">capable of striking directly at the forces of fossil capital<\/a>.
