Trump\u2019s victory in the 2016 Presidential Election defied more than the polls; it also challenged feel-good assumptions about the inevitable triumph of progressive democratic ideals. In his campaign for the White House in 2008,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/opinion.latimes.com\/opinionla\/2008\/11\/echoes-of-king.html\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">Barack Obama invoked the saying<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that \u201cthe arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.\u201d In 2016,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2016\/11\/07\/politics\/hillary-clinton-campaign-final-day\/\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">Hillary Clinton asserted<\/span><\/a>, \u201cLove trumps hate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\"><span class=\"REGULAR\">We now know such lines are more prayer than prediction. In spite of a steady stream of hateful rhetoric and policy positions against weaker sections of society\u2014or, more chillingly, because of it\u2014Trump scored major upsets in key states. How large a role hate played in Trump\u2019s ascent is disputed. His detractors say it defined his campaign; his defenders claim that it\u2019s not really what he is about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">The truth may lie in between. On the one hand, the new leader of the free world is not wedded to his positions. He is a lower order chauvinist than, say, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is\u00a0<span class=\"Hyperlink\">committed to a Hindu nationalist agenda<\/span>\u00a0bent on dismantling India\u2019s post-independence multicultural order.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">On the other hand, Trump\u2019s attacks on Mexicans and Muslims did amount to key election promises. They were not throwaway remarks like those of former Singapore Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. Lee never let political correctness curb his indulgence for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theonlinecitizen.com\/2011\/04\/10\/mm-lee-speaks-again-on-malay-muslim-integration\/\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">cultural<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/womensaction.sg\/article\/education\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">gender<\/span><\/a>\u00a0stereotypes, but he was also a defender of racial and religious equality\u2014and would have\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.airconditionednation.com\/2015\/11\/23\/identity\/\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">eliminated without hesitation<\/span><\/a>\u00a0any would-be Modis and Trumps dabbling in incendiary communal politics in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\"><span class=\"REGULAR\">Immediate post-election analyses suggest that Trump bore into an underground cavern of seething hostility against the governing class. Post-election commentators say voters\u2019 animosity toward the establishment is understandable, considering how many Americans justifiably feel let down and left behind by policymakers. What this does not explain, though, is why minority-bashing had to be incorporated into an agenda for change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\"><span class=\"REGULAR\">This is probably because more rational responses were ideologically unpalatable. A social democratic revolution, as championed by Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren on the left, was anathema to the powerful 1 per cent that it aimed to dethrone, and even too unsettling for many among the 99 per cent that it was meant to help. It proved simpler to scapegoat minorities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\"><span class=\"REGULAR\">It is a tactic that has been used by demagogues around the world for generations: construct stark divides between \u2018us\u2019 and \u2018them\u2019; blame them for our problems; and present oneself as the only leader clear-sighted enough to recognise them for what they are, and strong enough to deal with them. In the United States, such messages found a receptive audience among the many white Americans who are uneasy about the shift in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"REGULAR\">their country\u2019s cultural centre of gravity toward greater diversity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\"><span class=\"REGULAR\">If you are seeking glimmers of hope, you might argue that Trump\u2019s bigotry did not run deep; that it was just a performance for short-term electoral gain. Even if this is true of Trump the man, it overlooks the fact that his campaign\u2014contrary to some media portrayals\u2014was not run solo. The movement included long-running, organised hate groups, none of which are going to change their spots now that they are on the winning side.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">Most of the alarm has focused on the endorsements he received from David Duke and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-politics\/wp\/2016\/11\/01\/the-kkks-official-newspaper-has-endorsed-donald-trump-for-president\/\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">Ku Klux Klan<\/span><\/a>. There are lesser-known, but more influential, merchants of hate that have systematically and successfully inserted paranoid intolerance into US political discourse over the years. Anti-Muslim sentiment, for example, was cultivated by a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanprogress.org\/issues\/religion\/reports\/2015\/02\/11\/106394\/fear-inc-2-0\/\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">fringe group of misinformation experts<\/span><\/a>\u00a0who claimed that Barack Obama is a Muslim, that American Muslims want to introduce Islamic law or sharia, and that their mosques preach violent jihad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">One of these think tanks was behind a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-fix\/wp\/2015\/12\/07\/donald-trumps-call-to-ban-muslims-from-coming-to-the-u-s-has-a-very-bad-poll-at-its-center\/\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">debunked study<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that Trump cited to justify his proposed ban on Muslims entering the country.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/hatewatch\/2016\/03\/28\/meet-anti-muslim-leaders-advising-donald-trump-and-ted-cruz\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">Anti-Muslim ideologues<\/span><\/a>\u00a0were named as Trump advisors. Even if Trump the candidate was merely putting on a show purely for campaign purposes, there is every risk that the bigotry espoused by his aides and advisors will be institutionalised within the Trump Presidency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\"><span class=\"REGULAR\">But if the 2016 campaign was full of warning sirens, it also contained signs of hope. The pushback against hateful rhetoric was not insignificant, and the fact that Trump won the White House does not mean he won the argument or silenced counterviews.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">The mainstream news media, for all their failures,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/columnist\/rieder\/2016\/02\/17\/rieder-political-fact-checking-rise\/80502526\/\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">regularly factchecked<\/span><\/a>\u00a0his wild claims and called him out on his invective. Civil rights organisations like the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/20160413\/trump-effect-impact-presidential-campaign-our-nations-schools\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">Southern Poverty Law Center<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/feature\/donald-trump-one-man-constitutional-crisis\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">American Civil Liberties Union<\/span><\/a>\u00a0did their part. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/57234224-ec91-11e5-bb79-2303682345c8\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">military<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2016\/07\/national-security-clinton-trump-225137\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">national security<\/span><\/a>\u00a0establishment hinted at potential resistance against rabid Trumpism engaging in all-out war against Muslims.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">Less noticed, but possibly more impactful in the long run, is opposition from within the Religious Right.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/28\/opinion\/the-conservative-intellectual-crisis.html?_r=0\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">Younger Christian Evangelicals<\/span><\/a>\u00a0who will inherit the movement appear comfortable with America\u2019s growing diversity and ready to resist against Trump\u2019s amoral demagoguery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\"><span class=\"REGULAR\">Perhaps it is still the case that the arc of history will bend toward justice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\"><span class=\"REGULAR\">Just not yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"parent":30,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-157","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.1 -
