Clinton made her first bid for the US presidency and did not overly emphasize her gender. Senior adviser\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/%202015\/02\/25\/us\/politics\/to-break-highest-glass-ceiling-clin%20ton-gives-nod-to-gender.html?_r=0\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">Ann Lewis called this decision the \u201cbiggest missed opportunity\u201d of the primaries and said Clinton \u201cceded the mantle of barrier-breaker entirely to Barack Obama<\/span><\/a>\u201d. Prior to and during the 2016 Democratic primaries, Clinton sought to reclaim that mantle. In December 2015, Clinton released the \u201844 boys is too many!\u2019 ad, featuring little girls reading aspirational letters written to Clinton. In a September 2015 interview and again\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Politics\/hillary-clinton-political-outsider-president\/story?id=33898281;%20https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/the-fix\/wp\/2016\/02\/05\/hillary-clinton-just-suggested-shes-not-establishment-come-on\/\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">in a primary debate in February 2016, Clinton pushed back on the idea that she was an establishment candidate by saying, \u201cI cannot imagine anyone being more of an outsider than the first woman president\u201d<\/span><\/a>. In April 2016, Donald Trump said, \u201cIf Hillary Clinton were a man, I don\u2019t think she\u2019d get 5% of the vote.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/hillary-clinton-donald-trump-woman-card-donors_us_5727b4c5e4b0b49df6ac0b3e\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">The only thing she\u2019s got going is the woman\u2019s card\u201d; in response, Clinton sold physical \u201cwomen cards\u201d and raised $2.4 million in 3 days<\/span><\/a>. Clinton capitalized on her gender.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\"><span class=\"REGULAR\">Moving into the general election, there was a shift in Clinton\u2019s gendered appeals. Clinton focused less on what was new about her, and focused more on what had been there all along: a persistent focus on children, women, and families\u2014issues women voters typically place a higher value on than men. Her history of work on the Children\u2019s Defense Fund and Children\u2019s Health Insurance Program, a celebration of her proclamation in China of \u201chuman rights are women\u2019s rights and women\u2019s rights are human rights,\u201d and her other endeavors were echoed in advertisements, rallies, and numerous DNC speeches, including in running mate Tim Kaine\u2019s speech: \u201cWhen you want to know something about the character of somebody in public life, look to see if they have a passion that began long before they were in office, and that they have consistently held it throughout their career\u2026Hillary has a passion for kids and families.\u201d During the third presidential debate, Clinton also went arguably further than any presidential candidate has in defending women\u2019s reproductive rights. All of this reframed the gendered focus away from Clinton\u2019s personal gender and toward direct appeals to women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\"><span class=\"REGULAR\">When it came to attacking her opponent\u2019s record on his treatment of women, Clinton did not shy away. During the third debate she attacked Trump\u2019s character and sent a clear appeal to women, \u201cDonald thinks belittling women makes him bigger. He goes after their dignity, their self-worth, and I don\u2019t think there is a woman anywhere that doesn\u2019t know what that feels like.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">A key culprit in undermining Trump\u2019s pull with women was Trump himself, and Clinton capitalized on Trump\u2019s words. Her \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vHGPbl-werw\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">Mirrors<\/span><\/a>\u2019 ad and the super PAC ad \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UKmhK8G--7c&amp;feature=youtu.be\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">Quotes<\/span><\/a>\u2019 featured Trump\u2019s past derogatory comments on women, paired with shots of women of various ages and races. The \u2018Quotes\u2019 ad was particularly effective with women.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/01\/upshot\/insults-and-ads-how-gender-hurts-trump-but-doesnt-lift-clinton.html?em_pos=small&amp;emc=edit_up_20160502&amp;nl=upshot&amp;nl_art=0&amp;nlid=54115655&amp;ref=headline&amp;te=1\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">After watching the ad, Trump\u2019s unfavorable ratings among women went up by 19 points relative to those who did not see the ad; for men, the shift was 1 point<\/span><\/a>. During the third debate Trump said, \u201cNobody has more respect for women than I do,\u201d and minutes later called Clinton \u201csuch a nasty woman.\u201d Clinton supporters reappropriated the label by wearing \u201cNasty Woman\u201d T-shirts, flooding social media, and Clinton surrogate Sen. Elizabeth Warren used it as a rallying cry during her speeches.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">Perhaps Trump\u2019s most damaging moment with women came with the Access Hollywood recording, in which he described kissing and grabbing women without their consent because, \u201cwhen you\u2019re a star\u2026You can do anything.\u201d During a rally,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IWah8esawlg\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">Michelle Obama delivered the most direct response from the Clinton team to the \u201cTrump Tapes.\u201d<\/span><\/a>\u00a0Having Obama deliver this attack, instead of Clinton, was necessary to some extent. Bill Clinton was not running for president, but Hillary is nonetheless his wife and his legacy in this area carries baggage. By having a strong surrogate who has no baggage in this domain make the attack, Clinton\u2019s campaign could more safely land an effective blow. In response,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/news\/301161-glenn-beck-michelle-obama-gave-most-effective-political-speech\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">Glenn Beck said Obama\u2019s speech was \u201cthe most effective political speech since Ronald Reagan<\/span><\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\"><span class=\"REGULAR\">Clinton appealed to women, but only some embraced her appeals. According to\u00a0<\/span>CNN<span class=\"REGULAR\">\u00a0exit polls, Clinton had a sizeable 12-point gender gap, and she had an advantage over Trump with women of color, married and unmarried women, and Democratic and Independent women. However, she did not win over white women and there was no surge in women voters. Despite this, Clinton stayed the course and focused on women in her concession speech, stating: \u201cto all the women\u2026who put their faith in this campaign and in me: I want you to know that nothing has made me prouder than to be your champion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"parent":30,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-143","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.1 -
