There was a brief mention in the second Trump\/Clinton debate, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/insideclimatenews.org\/news\/10102016\/presidential-debate-town-hall-donald-trump-hillary-clinton-climate-change-global-warming\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">climate change treated as an \u2018afterthought\u2019<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">Trump has previously (in 2012) suggested\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realdonaldtrump\/status\/265895292191248385?lang=en\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">climate change<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u201cwas created by and for the Chinese\u201d. His original \u2018first 100\u2019 days plan for climate and energy got pulled from his website, archived at<span class=\"REGULAR\">\u00a0<\/span>\u2018wayback machine\u2019.<span class=\"REGULAR\">\u00a0<\/span>It makes for depressing reading,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20161105192305\/https:\/\/www.donaldjtrump.com\/press-releases\/an-america-first-energy-plan\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">with promises to \u201ccancel the Paris Climate Agreement and stop all payments of U.S. tax dollars to U.N. global warming programs\u201d accompanied by a bonfire of domestic regulations<\/span><\/a><span class=\"Hyperlink\">.<\/span>\u00a0How much of that will happen remains to be seen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"FIRST-PARA\"><strong><span class=\"BOLD\">Early days<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"FIRST-PARA\">Awareness of the threat of climate change goes back decades, well before its arrival on public policy agendas in 1988. While John F. Kennedy was aware of environmental problems generally (he\u2019d read\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.audubon.org\/magazine\/may-june-2012\/rachel-carson-and-jfk-environmental-tag-team\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">Rachel Carson\u2019s Silent Spring<\/span><\/a>), it was his successor Lyndon Johnson who made the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailyclimate.org\/tdc-newsroom\/2015\/02\/president-johnson-carbon-climate-warning\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">first presidential statement about climate change<\/span><\/a><span class=\"Hyperlink\">,\u00a0<\/span>written for him by pioneering climate scientist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roger_Revelle\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">Roger Revelle<\/span><\/a>. Following a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/id\/38070412\/ns\/politics\/t\/nixon-administration-debated-global-warming\/\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">warning on the topic<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from Democratic senator Daniel Moynihan in September 1969, Nixon<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2010\/12\/gallery-why-nixon-created-the-epa\/67351\/\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">\u00a0created the US Environmental Protection Authority<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in an age when conservatism meant conserving things, but climate change was still very niche. Ronald Reagan\u2019s hostility to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/grist.org\/article\/griscom-reagan\/\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">all matters environmental<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is infamous, with attempts to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1981\/07\/03\/us\/reagan-reversing-many-us-policies.html?pagewanted=all\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">abolish both the Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency<\/span><\/a>, but with the credibility of atmospheric scientists high thanks to their\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1023\/A:1005315532386\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">discovery of the ozone hole<\/span><\/a>, moves towards a climate agreement could not be completely resisted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"FIRST-PARA\"><strong><span class=\"BOLD\">1988 and beyond<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"FIRST-PARA\">A combination of growing scientific alarm about the growth of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and a long hot summer in 1988 made climate change an election issue. On the campaign trail, then-Vice President\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1989\/11\/24\/opinion\/hot-air-and-the-white-house-effect.html\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">George H. W. Bush announced in his presidential campaign<\/span><\/a>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">\u201cThose who think we\u2019re powerless to do anything about the \u201cgreenhouse effect\u201d are forgetting about the \u201cWhite House effect\u201d\u2026 I will convene a global conference on the environment at the White House\u2026 We will talk about global warming\u2026 And we will act\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">He didn\u2019t act, of course, successfully insisting targets and timetables for emissions reductions be removed from the proposed climate treaty to be agreed at the Rio Earth Summit, before he would agree to attend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">It was 2000 before presidential candidates debated the issue.\u00a0<span class=\"Hyperlink\">George W. Bush (2000-09) said<\/span>:<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">\u201cI think it\u2019s an issue that we need to take very seriously. But I don\u2019t think we know the solution to global warming yet. And I don\u2019t think we\u2019ve got all the facts before we make decisions\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">The\u00a0<span class=\"Hyperlink\">peak year for climate concern was 2008<\/span>, with climate rating a mention in all three presidential debates\u201d. Obama framed climate change as an energy independence issue, arguing that: \u201cwe\u2019ve got to walk the walk and not just talk the talk when it comes to energy independence\u201d. Despite a petition with 160,000 signatures, the debate moderators for the 2012 debate did not put the issue on the agenda, with the Republican nominee, Mitt Romney, accused of\u00a0<span class=\"Hyperlink\">recanting early climate change positions<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"FIRST-PARA\"><strong><span class=\"BOLD\">Why the silence?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"FIRST-PARA\">There are two reasons<a id=\"_idTextAnchor016\"><\/a>. One is simply down to the politicisation around the issue. As shown above, as recently as 2008 Republicans admitted climate change was happening.<span class=\"REGULAR\">\u00a0<\/span>In 2012 only one contender, Jon Huntsman, was willing to do so, he soon dropped out, with his views dramatically unpopular\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/07\/opinion\/the-gop-cant-ignore-climate-change.html\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">among Republican voters<\/span><\/a>. What happened? In two words:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.alternet.org\/environment\/climate-change-more-divisive-abortion-blame-republicans\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">Tea Party<\/span><\/a>. The emergence of the hyper-conservative Tea Party Republican faction was the culmination of a longer-term trend of \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/tcs.sagepub.com\/content\/27\/2-3\/100.abstract\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">anti-reflexivity<\/span><\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">The second reason is more gloomy, because it is more intractable. Those who have denied climate change for so very long will find it very costly \u2013 both politically and psychologically \u2013 to reverse their position and admit that they have been wrong. Climate change denial has become\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ssir.org\/articles\/entry\/climate_science_as_culture_war\"><span class=\"Hyperlink\">a cultural position<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"FIRST-PARA\"><strong><span class=\"BOLD\">What next?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"FIRST-PARA\">In the day since Trump won, there has been a flurry of commentary. Joe Romm asks\u2019\u00a0<span class=\"Hyperlink\">Will Trump go down in history as the man who pulled the plug on a liveable\u00a0climate?<\/span>\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">\u201cThe shocking election of Donald Trump on Tuesday night is a turning point in the history of climate action, and therefore the history of homo sapiens. That\u2019s because whatever warming, sea level rise, ocean acidification, and Dust-Bowlification we commit to is\u00a0<span class=\"Hyperlink\">irreversible<\/span>\u00a0on a timescale of a thousand years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">For David Roberts \u201c<a><span class=\"Hyperlink\">Trump\u2019s election marks the end of any serious hope of limiting climate change to 2 degrees\u201d, with \u201cwidespread suffering and misery from climate change now effectively inevitable<\/span><\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Basic-Paragraph-US\">Meanwhile, the carbon dioxide accumulates, and the impacts pile up.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"parent":25,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-139","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.1 -
